It would almost make sense that turning off the A/C when you are not at home would make sense. Many do, but there is a better suggestion. Rather than turning the A/C off, turn the thermostat up. We at Fulford HVAC recommend no more than about seven to 10 degrees while you are away at work or running errands.
Still not convinced? That is okay. Here are Fulford’s three reasons you should turn up the A/C rather than turn it off completely.
#1 – No mold and bugs
Turning off the A/C means the home humidity will go up. Two things that adore a warm, wet environment are, you guessed it, mold and bugs.
The A/C system does more than cool. The system works to dehumidify. Turning off the A/C means the humidity will rapidly rise to over 60 percent – the perfect amount for mold and bugs to settle in and call your place home.
Turning the A/C up just seven degrees will hold the humidity to 45 to 55 percent – ideal for your home.
#2 – Comfort is King
No one likes a hot, humid home. This is why people call Fulford HVAC when their A/C goes out. Most people are in a panic because the home is so uncomfortable. Turning the A/C off will give you just that – a warm, uncomfortable home. It would be fine to go out if it were in December, but this is August. The dog days of summer are on us.
So, this leads us to the third reason, and what is likely the best reason.
#3 – Turning up the thermostat saves you money
Now we have your attention.
You can save about 10 percent on your home electricity bill with raising the thermostat.
You are reducing the difference in temperature between the outside and inside. This lowers your workload and saves you money.
Here is a scenario.
Leave work at 7 a.m. – Turn A/C up to 85.
Come home at 5:30 p.m. – Turn A/C down to 75.
The unit has to work to lower the temperature 10 degrees. This is nothing serious.
Now, let’s say you turn the A/C off completely.
Leave work at 7 a.m. – A/C is at 75.
Come home at 5:30 p.m. – Home is now 90+ with humidity.
Now the unit has to work extra hard to lower the temperature and fight the humidity. It is simply not worth it to turn your A/C off during the day.
