The oil in your car is its lifeblood. Sure, you can argue the gas is important, but the oil is what keeps your car going for many years. The same thing can be said with your HVAC system’s filter. Your filter needs to be changed at minimum every three months.
It is normal to question why this is a good idea, and that is the purpose behind this blog. The improved air quality is certainly one reason, but many are willing to forgo this because of the “hassle” of changing the filters on a regular basis.
Those who still think it is some you can skip over may be surprised when they read the following information. The three good reasons you should change your air filter on a regular basis, and more importantly, what can happen if you do not.
Air filters are just that – filters. This means dirt, dust and other debris can quickly make its way onto the screen and drastically reduce your airflow. The longer you wait, the more severe the problem becomes as the HVAC system works harder to circulate air. This will cause your utility bill to rise and do so significantly.
A harder working system means the coil inside your unit may freeze because of the increased work load. Coil repair and replacement is very costly but is as easy to prevent as a changed filter.
A complete and total failure is possible. Leaving filters in for too long can result in a catastrophic failure of a major piece of machinery in your system. This means a call to us for a servicing call and repair – something that is much more costly than an air filter repair.
Proper care and maintenance means your HVAC system should run well for 12 or more years. Keep that filter changed. Call us at Fulford Heating and Cooling as well for a unit check. We can come to your home and run some diagnostics to help keep your HVAC system in top shape.
